Movie #2631: La Jovan (1960, Luis Bunuel)
Excellent. Twin story lines: man lusting after a girl that he knows is much too young for him and hating a man who has a different skin colour than his. For a change a positive religious message as a visiting minister figures out what is going on and manages to straighten everything out.

Movie #2629: Old Enough (1984, Marisa Silver)
A lot of the scenes don't really ring true but they're close enough that they keep you interested in the characters all the way through. Kudos to Sarah Boyd who played the 11 year old. It looked like she'd have a great career in film. Well, she does have a career in film except that it's as an editor and not as an actress.

Day #23,013

Walk km 18,453-18,466: Meetup walk to 3rd Beach
Meetup walkers with horse statues
approx km 18,454 nearing Georgia Ave

Movie #2626: Whistling In The Dark (1933, Elliott Nugent)
Surprisingly good early comedy. No WC Fields or Marx Bros here, just Ernest Truex. No, I don't know this guy either but he has a nice flair for comedy. And Edward Arnold plays the villain (easy one there). Fun.
Found on the internet: Apparently Truex and Arnold played these roles on Broadway so they had plenty of time to get them down pat.

Day #22,983

TV episode #129: Hong Kong - When Strangers Meet (1960, Boris Sagal)
TV episode #130: Have Gun Will Travel - The Uneasy Grave (1961, Andrew V McLaglen)

It's a Pippa Scott double episode. The episode of interest here is Hong Kong. Didn't know such a TV show existed. Rod Taylor plays a Hong Kong newspaperman. The plot for this one was quite complicated - maybe that's why the series didn't last long..

Day #22,954

Walk km  17,924-17,936 (5019 to go): Stanley Park meetup

Meetup walkers
approx km 17,933 the seawall (Stanley Park)

Movie #2579: Passion (1954, Allan Dwan)

Standard oater of battle over range land leading to murder and revenge. However, the director was Allan Dwan and the cinematographer was John Alton. Forget the plot, this is just beautiful to watch (even on YouTube).

Movie #2580: Grand Canyon Trail (1948, William Witney)
This story does not have anything to do with the Grand Canyon and there is no trail. I guess the name just sounded good. It's Roy Rogers (without Dale Evans but with Jane Frazee) abely supported by Andy Devine.
It has all the trappings of an oater plus plenty of comedy (and a few songs too). No doubt they thought the kids would really go for the comedy stuff and they were right as Roy went on to be the king of the cowboys.
BTW, Witney was a big favourite of Quentin Tarantino but its hard too see why here as the YouTube print is in very bad shape.

Day #22,939-940

Walk km 17,811-17,819: walking around downtown
Walk km 17,819-17,830: 7 parks along Vancouver/Burnaby border

leaves on the trail
approx km 17,825 exiting Everett Crowley Park to Marquette Cr

Movie #2566: The Fast Lady (1962, Ken Annakin)

Has all the telltale signs of the idiotic British comedy. But it does add a little bit of style not found in the Carry On series. One bit of style is Julie Christie who soon moved on to more mature roles.

Book #356 (#48 this year): Dirty Tricks(1991, Michael Dibdin)

First person account of murder and mayhem from a first class rotter. The whole thing is extemely clever as our hero tries to explain away his many evil deeds, all the while making it plain to one and all that he is slime personified. Clever indeed.

Movie #1517 (#298 this year): Executive Koala(2005, Minoru Kawasaki)

Have I mentioned that the Japanese are totally nutso? There ain't no place else where they could have possibly made a movie like this.
Mr Tamura is a mid-level executive in a pickle company. He's also a koala. He's also an ax-murderer. Lots of blood and gore in this one as the executive koala takes his ax to almost every cast member. There's also some song and dance numbers. And a bit of romance. Martial arts? Sure!
In short, it's just totally stoooooooooopid.

Movie #1431 (#229 this year): Jail Bait(1954, Ed Wood Jr)

Timothy Farrell's "luxury" digs

Really really bad. Maybe not as funny as Plan 9 since you can't get quite as kooky with a crime drama as with sci-fi. It's still pretty kooky.
My favourite part was where the gangster tells his moll about how lucky she is to be with him: just look around at all this luxury. The problem is, the set is a bare-bones apartment. Later, the moll says the same thing... and they're still in the bare-bones apartment. Did Ed think that they could afford a fancy set and when the deal fell through he forgot to change the dialogue? It's bad enough that Ed had to shoot on such a crappy set but to have his own characters in the movie actually point it out to the audience..... that's cruel.

Movie #1432 (#230 this year): Bachelor Bait(1934, George Stevens)

Rochelle Hudson (looking very colourful)

It's a double feature of "Bait" movies. There really couldn't possibly be a greater disparity between the directors: Ed Wood was from the lowest level of skid row while George Stevens was part of Hollywood royalty.
In this one we meet Stuart Erwin again (last seen in "Mr Boggs Steps Out"). Once again he's a naive/nervous sort that most of the audience can relate to. Playing the love interest is Rochelle Hudson who is again as cute as a button. Pleasant little picture but it's no "Jail Bait".
