Movie #1643: Trans-Europ-Express (1967, Alain Robbe-Grillet)

Takes the concept of Jean-Luc Godard's characters acknowledging the camera to the extreme. We no sooner settle in to watch a nice crime thriller than we hear the screenwriters discussing what we've just seen. They change their minds so we see the scene reshot with the changes. For example: At one point they can't decide if the main character is carrying a parcel or if he left it somewhere so after watching the scene without a parcel we see a number of shots of this character walking along the docks and tossing a parcel into the water. In the end, it almost appears that it's the characters in the movie who are watching the movie!
Every time we start getting interested in the plot we are stopped and told (one way or another)that it's only a plot. It's only a movie. All in good fun.
